VOLUNTEERS across the Costa del Sol are giving up two days of their time to collect non-perishable goods at leading supermarkets which will be distributed to the poor in Andalucia in time for Christmas.

The Food Bancosol initiative is carried out twice a year, with shoppers encouraged to donate pasta, rice and tinned goods etc today (Friday November 22) and tomorrow, to help bring a bit of festive cheer to those less fortunate.

Bancosol Alimentos, founded in 1998 in Malaga, is a non-profit organisation which relies on the support of volunteers

As part of the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), the aim is to avoid food waste and encourage the donation of non-perishable foods to help ‘reverse the situation of people at risk of social exclusion’.

Bancosol Alimentos also has projects which raise awareness about responsible consumption and ways to contribute towards a sustainable environment.

You can find collection points in Mercadona, Carrefour and Lidl to name a few of the stores.
